La Tontouta International Airport

La Tontouta International Airport (NOU) is the main international gateway to Nouméa and the primary airport serving New Caledonia. Located approximately 52 km northwest of Nouméa’s city center in La Tontouta (Païta commune), it handles all long-haul and international commercial flights to and from the territory, connecting New Caledonia with Australia, New Zealand, Japan, other Pacific islands, and parts of Asia.

Facilities

The airport features a single passenger terminal serving both international departures and arrivals. Facilities include check-in counters, immigration and customs services, baggage claim, airline service desks, and passenger assistance counters. Travelers can access duty-free shops, retail outlets, cafés, and snack bars offering light meals and beverages.

Free Wi-Fi is available within the terminal. Additional services include ATMs, currency exchange, car rental counters, and parking facilities for short- and long-term stays. The airport provides accessibility services for passengers with reduced mobility.

Airlines

Airlines operating at NOU include Aircalin (the international carrier of New Caledonia), Air France (via regional connections), Qantas, Air New Zealand, and Air Vanuatu (subject to operational status).

Destinations commonly include Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland, Port Vila, Nadi, Papeete, Tokyo, and other Pacific regional hubs, with onward global connections through partner airlines.

Transportation

Due to the airport’s distance from Nouméa, transportation options primarily include airport shuttle buses (such as the Raï bus service), taxis, ride services, car rentals, and pre-arranged hotel transfers. Travel time to central Nouméa typically ranges from 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. Public bus services are limited, so advance planning is recommended.
