Velana International Airport

Velana International Airport (MLE) is the main international gateway to the Maldives, serving the capital region around Malé and connecting the island nation to destinations across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and beyond. Located on Hulhulé Island in the North Malé Atoll, the airport is managed by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and handles both international and domestic flights.

As the busiest airport in the country, Velana International Airport plays a crucial role in supporting the Maldives’ tourism and business travel sectors.

Facilities

The airport recently opened a modern international terminal on 26 July 2025, significantly expanding passenger capacity to approximately 7 to 7.5 million annually. The terminal provides travelers with check-in counters, self-service kiosks, immigration and e-gate services, and boarding via aerobridges.

Baggage handling is efficient, and amenities include retail outlets, duty-free shops, lounges, and a variety of food and beverage options ranging from cafés to full-service restaurants. Prayer rooms, ATMs, currency exchange counters, travel assistance desks, and free Wi-Fi are available throughout the terminal to enhance passenger comfort. Assistance for travelers with reduced mobility is also provided.

Airlines

Velana International Airport is served by the national carrier, Maldivian, as well as major international airlines such as Emirates and Singapore Airlines. These carriers connect the Maldives to key regional and long-haul destinations, ensuring smooth access for both leisure and business travelers.

Transportation

Travelers can reach Malé and nearby islands via taxis, ride-hailing services, ferries, speedboats, and seaplane transfers, which are essential for accessing resorts across the atolls. While airport shuttle services are limited, private transfers and hotel-arranged transportation are commonly used by visitors.
