Mehrabad International Airport (THR) is a major domestic and limited international airport located approximately 8 km west of central Tehran, Iran. While most of Tehran’s international long haul flights operate from Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA), Mehrabad remains one of the country’s busiest airports for domestic traffic, serving as a key hub for internal routes across Iran and select regional destinations.

Facilities

Mehrabad International Airport consists of several terminals, notably Terminals 1, 2, 4, and 6, handling domestic departures and arrivals, with limited international services. Facilities include check in counters, security and immigration services for applicable flights, baggage claim areas, VIP and CIP lounges, retail shops, and food outlets offering Iranian and light international fare.

Passengers can access ATMs, currency exchange services, prayer rooms, and basic medical facilities within the terminals. WiFi is available in designated areas.

Airlines

Mehrabad primarily serves domestic carriers, including Iran Air, Mahan Air, Iran Aseman Airlines, Kish Air, Qeshm Air, and ATA Airlines. Destinations mainly include major Iranian cities such as Mashhad, Shiraz, Isfahan, Tabriz, Ahvaz, and Bandar Abbas. International flights from THR are limited and typically regional or charter services.

Transportation

Mehrabad International Airport is well connected to central Tehran. Line 4 of the Tehran Metro connects the airport at Mehrabad Airport Station to the wider metro network. Official airport taxis are available outside terminals and offer fixed rate fares to various city districts. Local ride hailing apps such as Snapp and Tapsi operate at the airport. Public buses also connect Mehrabad to key transport hubs within Tehran.

Due to Tehran’s traffic conditions, travel time to the city center can vary depending on the time of day. Mehrabad International Airport continues to play a vital role in Iran’s domestic aviation network, supporting business and leisure travel nationwide while complementing Imam Khomeini International Airport for long haul international connectivity.
