Osmani International Airport (ZYL) is the main international gateway serving Sylhet and northeastern Bangladesh, located approximately 7 km north of Sylhet city center. The airport plays an important role in connecting the Sylhet region, which has a large expatriate community, with domestic destinations and key international hubs, particularly in the United Kingdom and the Middle East.

Facilities

The airport has a single passenger terminal handling both domestic and international arrivals and departures. Facilities include check in counters, immigration and customs services, baggage claim areas, and security screening.

Passengers can access basic retail outlets, duty free shops for international departures, limited food and beverage options, prayer rooms, and waiting lounges. Additional amenities include ATMs, currency exchange counters, and car parking facilities. Recent runway extensions and infrastructure upgrades have improved the airport’s operational capacity and ability to accommodate larger aircraft.

Airlines

Airlines operating at ZYL include Biman Bangladesh Airlines and US-Bangla Airlines. Domestic routes primarily connect Sylhet with Dhaka and occasionally Cox’s Bazar. International services focus on destinations with significant Bangladeshi expatriate populations, including London in the United Kingdom and cities in the Middle East such as Dubai and Sharjah, subject to seasonal schedules and operational updates.

Transportation

Travelers can reach Sylhet city center by taxi, ride hailing services, and private car within approximately 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. Auto rickshaws known locally as CNGs are also available outside the terminal.

Public bus services operate in the surrounding area, though taxis and private transfers are generally the most convenient options for airport passengers. Many hotels in Sylhet can arrange private pickup services upon request.

Osmani International Airport continues to develop its infrastructure to strengthen international connectivity, particularly serving the Sylhet diaspora community abroad. It remains a key regional hub for both domestic and limited long haul international travel in northeastern Bangladesh.
